Scheduled launch of the Wideband Gapfiller Satellite made by Boeing Satellite Systems under contract with Department of Defense from 2011. WGS-9 is high capacity communication satellite operating on Super High Frequency (SHF) and using Ka band Global Broadcast Service (GBS). Satellite is based on BSS-702 satellite bus by Boeing and will weigh 5987 kg; it will be powered with two deployable solar arrays, propulsion is provided by single chemical thruster R-4D-15 HiPAT (by Aerojet Rocketdyne) and four electric XIPS-25 Ion engines.
As launch service provider United Launch Alliance was chosen. Company will utilize proven and reliable Delta-IV rocket - in Medium+ (5,4+) configuration. It means that rocket core will be supported by four solid boosters, with four solid rocket boosters (GEM-60), 5 meter payload fairing and larger tanks for hydrogen and oxygen in second stage.
