Pegasus XL • Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS)

Pegasus launch system is designed by Orbital ATK, air-launched, three stage rocket, with optional fourth stage. It is able to lift light weight satellites, up to 443 kg, only to low Earth orbit. Rocket remains in service since 1990 and it was utilized in 43 missions with six failures.

Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) is NASA project designed mainly as hurricane forecasting tool. It is planned to launch eight satellites with single-stage-to-orbit vehicles. Satellites will gather data about ocean surface using radar scatterometer and GPS data. Every satellite will weight 27.5 kg with length at deployed state at 159 cm. Satellites are designed for 5 years of operational life.
